| Paper | Stage | What is needed next | Target |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 · Cost today | Gap confirmed · data asks in preparation | Programme budgets from the network partners: GO-SHIP line costs, ship pCO2 system costs, mooring and float costs, synthesis effort. One check first: whether the SOCONET design submitted to WMO G3W in 2026 is already costed. | March 2027 |
| 2 · Requirements and technology | Scoping | A detection-threshold analysis for at least one mCDR pathway; numeric accuracy and density targets mapped onto what today's networks deliver; an engineering and platform-technology partner for the roadmap. | To be set |
| 3 · Savings and scale | Gap confirmed · survey design | Per-tonne MRV cost from registries and developers (none is public today); the shared-system costing built from papers 1 and 2. | To be set |
Project log
- Novelty assessment completed against the peer-reviewed and grey literature, 2015 to 2026. Gaps confirmed for papers 1 and 3; paper 2 to be written as a quantitative requirements synthesis. About 40 new references identified.
- Framing revised: three papers about one system at three moments. Economics and policy made explicit under all three; paper 3 defined as a cost curve versus scale.
- Plan presented to the OVSN meeting. Feedback: proceed with paper 1; paper 2 to inform and guide research; paper 3 as a sensitivity of scenarios, scale versus cost, concluding with a market analysis.
- Scope agreed and first literature synthesis completed: 53 references and 34 programme sources. Same day, the London Convention and Protocol parties adopted assessment frameworks for marine geoengineering research.
- First discussion with the WHOI Marine Policy Center on the economics of a shared observing system.
